Coming Second by Elbow

Standard

Elbow start off this ditty with a simple chord-progression on acoustic guitar. This is off their debut album, Asleep in the Back.

They released over 6 albums and 5 EPs since 1998. They have an eclectic sound that varies quite a bit. This is song is probably one of there harder-edged tunes.

No video for this song, so sit back, close your eyes and enjoy…

New York’s A Go Go by SLAVE to the SQUAREwave

Standard

bchangefrontsmall[1]A disco-like beat with a nice guitar-edge and theatrical vocals surprisingly work well in this song. This is from SLAVE to the SQUAREwave‘s  sixth album, Big Change.

With over 8 albums released this Toronto band has stayed under the radar. They were introduced to me by my late friend, Don Berns (aka Doctor Trance) and I’m glad he did. They have a very distinct sound and they definitely need more exposure.

I could only find a live version of this song that I could share. This is from the CBC’s Radio On The Go.

Save The Party For Me – Grouplove

Spreading_Rumours_Album_Art[1]No video for this song.

Grouplove jam this joyous melody. This is off their last album, Spreading Rumours.

This LA indie band have released one EP and 2 albums, the most recent in 2013. They’ve matured from an uptempo happy-sunshine band to a more melodic one while still keeping some it’s happiness.

Girls Like You by The Naked and Famous

Standard

In interesting video where we slowly zoom into the band in an apartment complex.

The Naked and Famous take us on a journey with this killer song, easing in slowly, and ending up somewhere else. This is off their debut album, Passive Me, Aggressive You.

This Kiwi band have only released two album thus far, both full of great Synthpop sounds. Their music has appeared in numerous TV shows, including an episode in the 13th season of Canada’s own Degrassi. They’re currently on tour coming to a city near you.

Grown Up by Danny Brown

Standard

A great video with a younger version of Danny Brown rapping and doing kid things. My favourite moment in the video is when he crosses the street holding his mom’s hand.

This indie Detroit rapper has the perfect music and rap style for this particular song. It has turned me back onto rap, but it stands miles away from the rest of his music, transcending the rap genre. This is a non-album single.

Danny Brown has released 3 albums and 3 EPs. You can also download a lot of his Mixtapes gratis from his website. Here’s hoping for more songs like this from him. If you’re not into rap, you probably won’t like any of his other music.

I Begged You Everything by Bad Books

Standard

No video for this song.

Bad Books play this sad acoustic ditty. The melody is slow and sad, and the lyrics are emotionally charged. This is off their first album, the self titled, Bad Books.

This band is composed of Kevin Devine and members of Manchester Orchestra. They’ve only released 2 albums so far with the latest II just coming out this year. This collaboration essential sounds just like the mellower side to Manchester Orchestra, and it’s very hard to tell the two apart, but I’m not really complaining, as I love both versions.

Blueberry Tree Part I by Husky Rescue

Standard

Trippy video to match the song.

Husky Rescue emote one of their mellower songs, a wonderful drug-trip soundtrack. And it’s only part one. This is from their second album, Ghost Is Not Real.

This Finnish trip-hop band have released 4 albums with their latest in 2010. I highly recommend you give any of their songs a listen on a lazy rainy Sunday afternoon.

Birth by The Faint

Standard

No video for this puppy.

The Faint drive this song home with determination. It’s got a nice little Placebo feel to it. This is from their 7th album, Wet From Birth.

I profess to not knowing much about this band. They are listed on Wikipedia as Indie rock, Post-punk revival, Dance punk, and New Wave and I could see bits and pieces of the the genres in this particular song. I will definitely be doing some research into more of their music.

This Is Our Emergency by Pretty Girls Make Graves

Standard

It seems that certain record companies are making it harder and harder to embed videos. And unfortunately this band’s label is one of them. You’ll have to click on the link to take you to another site to watch the video. Video is kind of lame, but the song does kick some ass.

Defunk band Pretty Girls Make Graves deliver a hard-driving rhythm in this fun tune about being frustrated. This is off their 2nd studio album, The New Romance.

This post-punk band from Seattle released 3 studio albums, and a few singles and EPs. Tis a pity they are no more.

Too Long Awake by Idlewild

Standard

Here’s a fan-made video. Someone spliced together images from the movie German movie Der Himmel über Berlin (Wings of Desire).

Idlewild weave a nice Shoegaze vibe with this song. It’s a bit of a departure from their normal indie-rock style. This is off their 5th studio album, Warnings/Promises.

This Scottish band have released 7th  studio albums hitherto, with their latest in 2009. They’ve just cancelled their US tour due to injury and one can’t help but wonder, whether this is it for the band, considering they’re currently on a writing hiatus.
