New York’s A Go Go by SLAVE to the SQUAREwave

A disco-like beat with a nice guitar-edge and theatrical vocals surprisingly work well in this song. This is from SLAVE to the SQUAREwave‘s  sixth album, Big Change.

With over 8 albums released this Toronto band has stayed under the radar. They were introduced to me by my late friend, Don Berns (aka Doctor Trance) and I’m glad he did. They have a very distinct sound and they definitely need more exposure.

I could only find a live version of this song that I could share. This is from the CBC’s Radio On The Go.

Hannah Georgas hails from Canada’s rock and roll capital, Newmarket, Ontario. She’s released 3 ablums thus far, as well as nominated for a Juno for her song off the same album, Robotic. Most of her music is low-key not straying to far from the sample below.

Girls Like You by The Naked and Famous

In interesting video where we slowly zoom into the band in an apartment complex.

The Naked and Famous take us on a journey with this killer song, easing in slowly, and ending up somewhere else. This is off their debut album, Passive Me, Aggressive You.

This Kiwi band have only released two album thus far, both full of great Synthpop sounds. Their music has appeared in numerous TV shows, including an episode in the 13th season of Canada’s own Degrassi. They’re currently on tour coming to a city near you.

Inventive video that takes place all around St. John’s, Newfoundland.

Hey Rosetta! bang out this interesting ditty. This is off their third album, Seeds.

This Canadian band have been around since 2005, but still have not quite made the jump to mainstream radio. Most of their music is a little too tame for me, with a few exceptions, like this one, but maybe they’re your cup of tea.

Haunt You by The Pack A.D.

The Pack A.D. hailing from Vancouver, seem a lot more angsty than most people from BC normally are, and that’s a good thing. This song if off their latest album, Unpersons.

This Canadian female duo have taken a page out of The White Stripes handbook for drums and guitar simplicity, with an edge. They’ve released 4 albums thus far, with songs ranging from slow meandering angry sadness, to just plain loud and angry. From the looks of this video, they’d probably be a great band to see live, especially since lead singer, Becky Black, is extremely easy on the eyes. And with her loud distorted guitar sound and awesome vocals, I think I have a new stage crush.

Heartbreaker by Jenn Grant

This is such a great song, and such a shitty boring video. If you’re going to have a band play their instruments, have all of them. Where’s the pianist???

Jenn Grant, a Nova Scotian, croons this folksy Fiest-like song. This is off her album Echoes.

This Canadian songstress has released 4 albums, and 2 EPs over the span of about 7 years. I’m not really into most of her songs, but this one is great.

23 by Blonde Redhead

A crappy video for a for a great movie soundtrack song.

Blonde Redhead entrance us with this tune off of their 7th studio album, 23. Although the lyrics are horrid, the music and vocals evoke a great atmosphere.

This “American” trio (2 members from Italy via Canada & 1 from Japan) have released 8 albums, and many EPS. This song is pretty much a slice of their style, so if you like it, investigate them.

Kick It by Peaches and Iggy Pop

Watch as Iggy Pop fends off zombies with a rubber arm. You’d think a music video with the undead would be more entertaining. Meh.

Peaches along with Iggy Pop kick it with this indie-punk tune. This is a bit of a departure from Peaches’ normal genre synthpunk. It’s off her 3rd studio album, Fatherfucker.

I’m not really fan of this Canadian synth-diva, but there are a few songs from her that I just love, this being one of them. She’s released 5 albums, and many singles, with her latest in 2009. Including Iggy Pop, she’s also worked with Karen O, The Flaming Lips, and Christina Aguilera to name a few.
