My Best Fiend play this tune that seems like it could be from a late 90s indie label. This is off their album, In Ghostlike Fading.

Jesus Christ, I can’t find very much about this band. They’re probably named after a 1999 German documentary by Werner Herzog about Klaus Kinski.

Surprise, surprise, there’s also no video for this song.

Coming Second by Elbow

Elbow start off this ditty with a simple chord-progression on acoustic guitar. This is off their debut album, Asleep in the Back.

They released over 6 albums and 5 EPs since 1998. They have an eclectic sound that varies quite a bit. This is song is probably one of there harder-edged tunes.

Tessellate by alt-J

Not quite sure what’s going on in this video. They all seem like characters from a bad rap video.

This English band have some serious mood in this song. This is off their debut album, An Awesome Wave.

alt-J or  ∆ have a nice distinctive sound that sets them apart from the rest of the junk that’s being played on radio nowadays. They’ve released 2 albums and 2 EPs.

New York’s A Go Go by SLAVE to the SQUAREwave

A disco-like beat with a nice guitar-edge and theatrical vocals surprisingly work well in this song. This is from SLAVE to the SQUAREwave‘s  sixth album, Big Change.

With over 8 albums released this Toronto band has stayed under the radar. They were introduced to me by my late friend, Don Berns (aka Doctor Trance) and I’m glad he did. They have a very distinct sound and they definitely need more exposure.

I could only find a live version of this song that I could share. This is from the CBC’s Radio On The Go.

What You Do To Me by Hannah Georgas

This Canadian songstress coos us with something fit for a David Lynch soundtrack. This is off her second album, Hannah Georgas.

Hannah Georgas hails from Canada’s rock and roll capital, Newmarket, Ontario. She’s released 3 ablums thus far, as well as nominated for a Juno for her song off the same album, Robotic. Most of her music is low-key not straying to far from the sample below.

You Rascal You by Hanni El Khatib

Hanni El Khatib rocks this tune with a hard electric guitar sound. This is off his debut album, Will the Guns Come Out.

Most of his music has a nice edge to it. He’s released 3 albums thus far with his latest, Moonlight, early this year. His music has been used in commercials and various TV shows from Californication to Luther to Gotham.

And to accompany the song, is this boring video about driving around at night and the lights of the city. All style, no substance.

Where the Kids Are by Blondfire

Weird video about hunting down a panda.

This song first appeared on Blondfire‘s EP, Where the Kids Are, and is also included on their latest album, Young Heart. 

Blondfire are an LA band whose members consist of a brother-and-sister duo. They’ve only 2 full albums, but they’re full of interesting indie pop songs.

Fiction by The xx

Arsty black and white video with no narrative. Why do they even bother?

This slow sultry song is from London based band, The xx. This is off their second album, Coexist.

Their music has been used many times in TV and movies. They have an interesting dream-pop sound which they never stray far from. They’re currently working on their third studio album.

Kings & Queens by Urban Cone

Pretty boring black and white, dimly lit video of the band playing mostly in silhouette. You can barely make out their bed-heads.

Urban Cone keep the Swedish synth-pop torch lit started by ABBA, with their début album, Our Youth. This song has more of an indie-vibe to it, than the rest of their stuff. Only about 4 songs caught my attention, because they’re not pop-tripe. Hopefully with their next album, they’ll shed some of their pop-ish sound for something a little grittier.

This LA indie band have released one EP and 2 albums, the most recent in 2013. They’ve matured from an uptempo happy-sunshine band to a more melodic one while still keeping some it’s happiness.
